Alan Shearer explains how Aston Villa were able to stifle Leeds United's creativity

Alan Shearer hailed Aston Villa's gameplan in their 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Whites fell behind early on to Anwar El Ghazi's strike and failed to find a way to break down a stubborn Villa defence.

Despite seeing plenty of the ball, the Whites struggled to create many clear-cut chances, with Villa proving a frustrating team to play against despite the absence of star man Jack Grealish.

Speaking to Premier League productions post-match, Shearer argued that Villa clearly had a gameplan of making a quick start to the game before holding on to what they had.

The pundit also said he was surprised about how flat Leeds were but said part of the credit for that should go to Aston Villa.

He said: "When we spoke about Leeds before the game, we mentioned excitement, pressing, goals, creativity, but there was none of that. None of that at all.

"The reason for that was because of Aston Villa and how they went about their job.

"They said it in the post-match interviews, straight from the off, they went after Leeds.

"They had a gameplan, kicked it long and then played one or two-touch football in the final third and they never gave Leeds a chance to settle or get into the game.

"Leeds were very flat, low on energy, which is surprising.

"You have to say well done to Aston Villa as we said at half-time they did a job on them in the first 45 minutes, we expected so much more from Leeds in the second half but that never came.

"That was all because of the way Aston Villa set up and the way they went about their job."
