Alan Shearer doubts whether Newcastle will avoid relegation from the Premier League

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has lost the confidence he previously held that his former side will avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Magpies limped to a disappointing 0-0 draw with West Brom on Sunday to nudge up to 16th place in the Premier League table, but they are now just one point clear of the relegation zone after Fulham's recent resurgence.

While Newcastle have won just two of their last 18 matches in all competitions under Steve Bruce, Fulham have managed to strip a 10-point gap between themselves and the Magpies down to just one point in the space of three weeks.

The weekend's results came off the back of a turbulent week for Newcastle, where not only did they lose Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin to injuries until at least April, they also had to deal with national headlines over a training ground bust-up between Bruce and Matt Ritchie, as well as claims that there was a 'growing resentment' within the Magpies' squad towards their manager.

It has left the Magpies looking nervously over their shoulder and the momentum of Scott Parker's side has left Shearer seriously worried about the prospects of his former club.

"It is going to be a big scrap between three or four clubs to get out of it and Fulham have got momentum at this moment in time," Shearer told Match of the Day 2.

"I know you are going to ask me if I am worried about Newcastle. Definitely.

"A couple of weeks ago if you had asked me I would have said I have real belief and confidence they will get out of it.

"I don't have that anymore because Fulham have got momentum."
