Alan Shearer does not hold back as he slams Newcastle players who didn't clap 'superb' fans

Alan Shearer has admitted that he was 'really surprised and disappointed' to see some Newcastle United players refuse to acknowledge the club's 'superb' supporters after the Magpies FA Cup defeat against Cambridge United.

Newcastle suffered a humiliating cup exit at the hands of the League One strugglers at St James' Park on Saturday after Joe Ironside fired his side to a 1-0 win.

There were more than 46,000 Newcastle fans there to witness the third-round giant killing and Eddie Howe led players and staff over to applaud those supporters who stayed behind after the game.

However, some players stormed down the tunnel without doing so and one individual even ignored new signing Kieran Trippier as he beckoned him over.

After the game, Howe reminded his players that they need 'to be brave enough to front up' when supporters pay 'big money' to watch them play.

Although Shearer was keen to pay tribute to Cambridge, first and foremost, the legendary number nine certainly agreed with the Newcastle head coach.

"Wasn't it brilliant for the FA Cup?" Shearer told BBC Breakfast. "It was fantastic for Cambridge. They took four or five thousand fans to St James' Park on Saturday and you could tell they were having the time of their lives and why not after what everyone has gone through.

"They were the better team, they turned up, they were hungry, they went after Newcastle and they thoroughly deserved it. They thoroughly deserved to go through to the next round.

"Newcastle were hopeless. It was a really disappointing day if you're a Newcastle fan. I was really surprised and disappointed to see some of the players just walk off the pitch without acknowledging the superb support inside St James' Park.

"It was a very disappointing day for them, but great for Cambridge and brilliant for the FA Cup."
