Alan Shearer disagrees with Jamie Carragher over Sadio Mane incident in Liverpool draw at Chelsea

Alan Shearer is adamant Sadio Mane should have been shown a red card on the opening seconds of Liverpool's draw at Chelsea on Sunday evening.

A high ball was played out to the left side of the pitch with Mane and Cesar Azpilicueta both competing aerially for the header, with the Liverpool man catching the Chelsea captain with his arm.

With just six seconds on the clock, referee Anthony Taylor only gave Mane a yellow card, leaving Thomas Tuchel on the Chelsea bench furious.

The Premier League record goalscorer, Shearer, disagreed with the opinion of Jamie Carragher regarding the punishment given for the challenge.

Shearer said on BBC's Match of the Day 2: "Red, all day, every day, it should be. I don't care whether it's after six seconds, six minutes, or 60 minutes - that should be a red card.

"Do not give me the rubbish that his eyes are on the ball. That doesn't make any difference whatsoever. That, for me, is endangering an opponent and it should have been a red card."

Taylor's decision to only give Mane a yellow card allowed the Liverpool forward to stay on the pitch and open the scoring in the first half - adding to Chelsea 's anger.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Carragher explained why he believed the incident did not quite amount to a sending off.

He said: "I think that is one of those ones that comes into the orange category. I think after six seconds that’s not going to be [a red] - I think if the point of his elbow gets him rather than almost his forearm I think he’s going off.

“I think the fact that it’s forearm, closer to his wrist rather than his elbow, possibly saves him, and the fact it’s six seconds.

"But it’s one of those that is worse than a yellow but I don’t think it’s quite a red.”
