Alan Shearer delivers verdict on Frank Lampard's first season at Chelsea

Alan Shearer has assessed Frank Lampard's first season in charge of Chelsea as 'unbelievable' after the Blues secured their spot in next season's Champions League.

Chelsea hosted Wolves on the final day of the season, knowing a point would be enough to seal a top-four finish, and did the job effectively by securing a 2-0 win.

That provides a significant boost to Lampard's side ahead of next weekend's FA Cup final against Arsenal and Shearer, the Premier League's all-time leading scorer, has been impressed by the former midfielder's first year in charge at Stamford Bridge.

"Unbelievable. You can imagine if they go ahead and win the cup next weekend, Champions League qualification," he told BBC's Match of the Day.

"Given what the circumstances were when he took over, sold their best player, couldn’t sign any players, had to bring a lot of youngsters into the team, and a lot of them have performed this season.

"He’s had to rely on some of the old guard later on, brought Giroud back into the team and he’s done well, certainly in the second half of the season.

"I don’t think they have a top-class goalkeeper either, so when you put all of that in the mix, it could be an unbelievable first season for Frank."
