Alan Shearer delivers his verdict on Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah's red card vs Leicester City

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes referee Chris Kavanagh was right in his decision making to send off Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah during the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

A goal to the good after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 21st-minute opener, Arsenal looked set to be on their way to a fifth successive victory in all competitions until substitute Nketiah was dismissed just minutes after stepping off the bench.

After a long VAR check, as well as Kavanagh watching a replay on the pitch-side monitor, the former Leeds United loanee was dismissed for catching Foxes defender James Justin on his knee, with Kavanagh deeming it as serious foul play.

Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta was furious with the decision and Arsenal have since lodged an appeal to get it overturned.

The red card proved costly for the Gunners as Leicester drew level late on thanks to Jamie Vardy's 22nd league goal of the campaign.

However, Match of the Day pundit Shearer believes Kavanagh made the correct call to send the youngster for an early bath.

"I think it is the right decision," the former England international said on Wednesday evening's Match of the Day. "I think he is high and I think he is endangering an opponent and in today’s world, it is a red card.

"It was very high, so I thought that was the right decision, a red card."

As outlined above, Arsenal have since made the decision to appeal the red card, with Nketiah facing the prospect of missing Sunday's North London derby with Tottenham Hotspur, a massive Premier League clash with Liverpool and the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley.
