Alan Shearer delivers brutal one-word Newcastle United verdict after Brighton defeat

Alan Shearer took aim at Newcastle United following their dismal defeat to Premier League relegation rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

Steve Bruce's side were beaten 3-0 by Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday evening.

Leandro Trossard put the Seagulls in front in first-half stoppage time, with Danny Welbeck and Neal Maupay adding to Newcastle's misery after the break.

The result puts 16th-placed Brighton four points ahead of the Magpies, with a much superior goal difference.

Newcastle remain fourth from bottom of the Premier League table, just outside the drop - two points clear of Fulham, with a game in hand.

Toon legend Shearer delivered a scathing one-word verdict on his former team at the final whistle.

Posting on Twitter, he simply said: "Abysmal". That was followed by a particularly angry-looking emoji.

Newcastle now have nine fixtures remaining as they look to save their season.

They now go into the final international break of the campaign, and return to action when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park on Sunday, April 4.
