Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand agree about Man City star Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has received an abundance of praise following his latest goal for England, which made history in a 2-0 win against Germany.

The Manchester City ace opened the scoring in the second half, netting his third goal in four games at Euro 2020, to help propel England into the quarter-finals with their first knockout victory against Germany since the 1966 World Cup final.

Sterling 's exploits have been crucial for England this summer, with the forward having scored the only goals of the games against Croatia and the Czech Republic in the group stage.

His latest goal, which was added to by Harry Kane, has set up a quarter-final clash against Ukraine in Rome on Sunday, with Gareth Southgate's side looking to secure another semi-final tournament appearance.

After the match, former England striker Alan Shearer was among those to issue Sterling with praise and explained the huge role of manager Southgate.

"The manager deserves credit for sticking with him and when the manager sticks with you, you’ve got to perform and he has done that for England. He’s been their go to guy this tournament," he told the BBC.

His comments were echoed by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who declared Sterling has become a national hero.

"We said before the game, that this is an opportunity to become a national hero. He’s got three goals, he’s been the one in this tournament [who] we needed to lift us and get us over the line and get us a result," said Ferdinand.

"He’s the person we looked to. What a professional, hard-worker, the courage is one of the things I love about him. He’s one of them players who has the ability to scare you. He’s hard to read, his trickery.

"At this stage of his career he’s producing the end product, he’s decisive and deciding games. I believe that this kid has been at that level [world class]."
