Alan Shearer and Phil Neville disagree on what Manchester United should do with David de Gea

BBC pundits Alan Shearer and Phil Neville have explained what Manchester United should do with David de Gea and Dean Henderson following the club's FA Cup loss to Chelsea.

The Reds suffered a 3-1 defeat at Wembley in the semi-finals of the prestigious competition and De Gea was criticised for his role in the disappointing result.

De Gea was not at his best for all three goals conceded but Chelsea's second stood out in particular, with Mason Mount's shot from outside the box squeezing beneath the Spaniard.

Neville told the BBC: “He’s unrecognisable from the ‘keeper that won four Player of the Year trophies out of five years. He’s making mistakes. Look at the three goals today, I think a confident, in-form and assured David De Gea saves all three.

"I think if I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I would be worried with his performance levels. They’ve dipped. His consistency is costing United games. I wouldn’t leave him out yet. He’s already stated that Henderson would be a future United number one. At the moment, he’s gonna go with De Gea. His credentials are still up there with the very best in the world. But at the moment, he’s just lost all of his confidence.”

Both Shearer and Neville agreed that De Gea should have done better and the former was particularly critical. But Shearer even insisted that this summer is the right time for United to transition towards giving Henderson, currently on loan at Sheffield, the number one role keeping role at the club.

“I think you bring him back to Manchester United when you know he’s going to be the number one. I don’t think there’s any point of bringing him back to sit on the bench, otherwise let him stay out there and keep gaining experience. Has that time come? Yes, the time has come for that.”
