Alan Shearer and Peter Crouch have a message for Chelsea ace Tammy Abraham after Norwich double

It was a weekend of firsts for some Premier League strikers, with Tammy Abraham, Sebastien Haller and Jordan Ayew all netting their first goals of the season.

Abraham notched twice in Chelsea's 3-2 win against Norwich City on Saturday, while West Ham's club record signing Haller bagged a brace in the Hammers' 3-1 win at Watford and Ayew scored the opening goal for Crystal Palace in their 2-1 win at Manchester United.

That was the Ghanaian international's first goal since January, and first since rejoining Palace on a permanent deal this summer, with Ayew helping the Eagles on their way to a first win against Manchester United in the Premier League era.

And the Premier League's all-time top scorer Alan Shearer said it will be a relief for each of three players to have got off the mark in just the third top flight game of the season.

“The longer you go without scoring, the more you start to doubt yourself," the former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker said, speaking on BBC programme Match of the Day 2.

“So the sooner you get off the mark, the better it is."

That was a view echoed by former Liverpool and Tottenham striker Peter Crouch, who endured a barren spell in front of goal after joining the Reds, failing to net in his first 19 games for the club before going on to net 42 goals in 134 appearances in all competitions.

And he reflected on how difficult that was for him, adding that it will help each of the strikers to get off and running for the season.

“I did go through one at Liverpool and it is not pleasant, it was horrible," he said.

“You just want to get an early one out of the way, off anywhere, so you can get off and running.

“And obviously a few players have managed to do that this weekend.

"I found it tough at first, but I have to say I managed to get a few after that."
