Alan Shearer and Michael Owen kept apart for Newcastle United vs Manchester United Amazon coverage

Alan Shearer and Michael Owen will be kept apart during Amazon Prime Video's festive coverage next week.

There is no love lost between the former Newcastle United team-mates and their feud made the headlines again following the publication of Owen's explosive auto-biography, 'Reboot', in September.

While addressing the Magpies' relegation in 2009, Owen wrote the 'saviour', Shearer, who was caretaker manager at the time, had 'failed' and 'rather than examine his own shortcomings, it felt easier to blame Michael Owen'.

As his contract wound down, Owen felt he was not fit enough to start that crucial final game of the campaign against Aston Villa, - much to Shearer's disappointment.

More than a decade on, the pair were both signed up by Amazon Prime Video, who are broadcasting 20 live Premier League games this month.

As box office as it would have been, it is hardly a surprise that Shearer and Owen will not be together for Newcastle's game against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

ChronicleLive understands Shearer will be co-commentating on the teatime clash alongside Clive Tyldesley while pundits Peter Schmeichel and Owen Hargreaves will be back in the studio with presenter Matt Smith. Mark Saggers, meanwhile, will be the reporter on the night.

Owen, who played for both Manchester United and Newcastle, will be at Molineux for Man City's trip to Wolves on December 27. An Amazon source told ChronicleLive it is a 'natural spreading out of the talent given the number of fixtures'.

Chris Waddle, Les Ferdinand and Jermaine Jenas were all involved when Newcastle made their debut on Amazon Prime Video against Sheffield United earlier this month.
