Alan Shearer and Ian Wright react as Gary Lineker cracks Michael Owen joke on Match of the Day

It's fair to say Michael Owen and Alan Shearer are not seeing eye-to-eye.

Their historic feud, which had seemingly gone somewhat under the radar for the last decade, reared its head following the release of Owen's recent autobiography.

It goes back to Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League in 2009 when Owen declared himself unfit for the season finale at Aston Villa.

Under the stewardship of Toon legend Shearer, the Magpies dropped into the second tier and it appears the pair simply haven't got on since.

Their spat went public on Twitter after extracts from Owen's book were serialised in the Mirror, and Gary Lineker couldn't refuse a little quip on Match of the Day on Saturday night.

With Liverpool taking on Newcastle at Anfield, the former Spurs forward said: "It’s now time for the Michael Owen derby, as Liverpool take on Newcastle.”

Ian Wright was in hysterics - although that famously doesn't take much - while Shearer afforded himself a wry smile towards the presenter.

“It’s sad that my feud with Alan Shearer rumbles on to this day – we used to be good mates,” Owen wrote in his autobiography.

"As I’ve been at pains to mention throughout this book, as far as I’m concerned, my relationship with him throughout my time at Newcastle was great.

“I’d lived with him in the early days and we saw each other socially when we both lived at Darras Hall.

"In my eyes, he was not only a strike partner on the pitch from a playing perspective; he was also a good mate.

"At no time did I get the impression that he saw things any differently.

"To put it simply, there has been a lot of lies, bulls*** and general mis-information surrounding the end of my time at Newcastle.

“The more I think about it, the more I understand why Alan behaves the way he does and continues to spread negativity about me whenever he can.

"He was brought in at St James’ Park as the saviour, the local boy. It could have been a great story. But he failed. Newcastle United were relegated."
