Ian Wright and Alan Shearer were in disagreement over the free-kick which ended Liverpool’s hopes of progressing in the FA Cup.
Referee Craig Pawson pointed for a set piece after Fabinho was adjudged to have fouled Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani, with Bruno Fernandes stepping up to dispatch from the resulting kick.
Earlier in the game, Jurgen Klopp’s side ended a run of back-to-back games without scoring when Mohamed Salah bagged two goals, but they were ultimately in vain.
Speaking during BBC’s post-match analysis from Old Trafford, former Newcastle striker Shearer reckons that Pawson made the right decision to award a free-kick.
“The defender comes through the back of Cavani, who uses all his experience and he uses his body well,” said Shearer.

“He gets his body in front of the ball. It’s a wonderful strike, but one the ‘keeper should save because it’s his side.”
However, former Arsenal striker Wright was having none of it, and believed it was the wrong call to award a set piece that cost Liverpool the game.
“There’s no way that’s a free-kick, no-one is telling me that’s a free-kick on Cavani,” said Wright.
“He’s going towards the ball and he’s starting to go down. It makes no difference what Fabinho does, he’s already on his way down.”
