Alan Shearer agrees with Thomas Tuchel over Timo Werner's performance for Chelsea vs Man City

Chelsea forward Timo Werner has been praised by Alan Shearer after his performance on Saturday evening.

Werner was a surprise starter for the Blues in their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, a 1-0 win thanks to Hakim Ziyech's second-half winner.

It was Werner who created the goal, bursting down the left-hand side before cutting a perfect pass across goal for man of the match Ziyech to tap home.

Werner has been criticised after many of his performances in a Chelsea shirt so far, but his latest drew praise from BBC pundit Shearer, who was impressed with the German's energy.

“We spoke about Werner before the game, we highlighted some of the sitters he’s missed this season but that’s why he was in the team today," he said.

"That’s why he was asked to play on the last defender, to run in behind because they knew City would struggle.”

And Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was equally as impressed, saying: " The two guys [Ziyech and Werner] were very, very good up front with the speed and acceleration – and the impact that Mason [had] with the pass.

"Timo and Hakim, it was the same lineup like against Liverpool where they were also very, very strong in an away game in a 1-0 victory.

"Everybody who is on the pitch needs to perform, now is the moment in the season where we cannot drop one per cent and that’s the way we want it."

Chelsea will discover their FA Cup final opponents on Sunday when Leicester City face Southampton in the other semi-final ahead of the final at Wembley Stadium on May 15.

The Blues also have seven games left in their battle to finish in the Premier League top four, while the two-legged semi-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid are also on the horizon for Tuchel's side.
