His career began in 2005 with Smallville, where he portrayed Aquaman, demonstrating his ability to excel in action-oriented roles. He further solidified his presence in the genre with Blue State Mountain, playing the football team captain.

Ritchson's notable projects include The Hunger Games, Titans, Reacher, and the Fast & Furious franchise, all of which demanded physical prowess. Despite his success in action films, he expressed a desire to explore diverse roles. His next venture, Ordinary Angels, directed by Jon Gunn, tells the story of Shannon, a hairdresser who finds purpose in helping a widower and his daughters. The film, based on a true story, follows Shannon's journey to support the family, particularly the youngest daughter in need of a liver transplant.

Starring alongside Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, Ritchson plays the widower, Ed. The cast also includes Nancy Travis, Tamala Jones, Amy Acker, Drew Powell, Skywalker Hughes, and Emily Mitchell. Ordinary Angels is set to hit theaters on February 23, 2024, offering a tale of faith, miracles, and the impact of ordinary individuals.
