Alan Mathews confident St Pat's players can remain grounded in bid for silverware

Alan Mathews insists there is no fear of heights in a St Pat's dressing-room peppered with title winners.

The Saints hit the top of the Premier Division on Monday night by virtue of beating Finn Harps 4-1.

It has been a long road back for a club that last won the League in 2013 - and last finished in the top three a year later.

There was celebratory singing in the dressing-room after the Saints realised that, with Shamrock Rovers losing to Bohs, they had reached the summit.

But the management team of Stephen O'Donnell and Alan Mathews are confident that the players will remain grounded in their quest for silverware.

"There are no prizes being handed out at this stage of the season," said Mathews, who has won FAI Cups as a manager and was part of Dermot Keely's title-winning coaching set-up at Shelbourne.

"I don't think you will (have a problem) with the group we have. Stephen has been there and done it with Dundalk, I've been involved with a couple of teams myself that have done OK.

"Then you've got the likes of Chris Forrester, Robbie Benson, Paddy Barrett, John Mountney, Ian Bermingham, Shane Griffin - all league winners.

"So that's absolutely something that won't happen and we're just happy to be in the place that we're at.

"We feel that there's a couple of levels that the lads can come up, their application in training has been very good, they have conducted themselves well in every session because they want to try and see if they can improve.

"When you're in that environment, the younger lads in particular have fed off that. We were delighted to come back in and be part of the group in the last few weeks, and results have improved."

After a strong start to the season, the Saints hit a rough patch in May.

But they rebounded strongly after the mid-season break to win three on the spin, including a 2-0 victory over in-form Sligo Rovers.

"We're talking about winning nothing - we're talking about winning football matches, that's all," stressed Mathews.

"And you win football matches by doing your work on the training ground, living your life right, applying yourself and every week you want to go out and play as well as you can.

"It's trying to find a way to win - the players have been able to do that, and when you’ve players who’ve been there and done that...we beat Sligo the other night. Some people would say, 'you’ll slip up on Monday night'.

"You have to do your work and take care of it. And now we’ve got to do the exact same on Friday down in Waterford. And whatever comes, comes.

"But if you keep doing that and having that mindset, drive that culture within the group, you’ll be OK."

Alfie Lewis was again a stand-out performer for the Saints in Monday's game and Mathews is hoping for positive news this week in the club's bid to hold onto the midfielder on loan from West Ham.

"Hopefully we’ll be in a position to talk about that later in the week," he said.

"That’s something that we’re working on, a work in progress. We definitely want him to stay here."
