Alan Hutton names key Rangers transfer position for Michael Beale as he makes 'competition' claim

Alan Hutton reckons Rangers will look to add another centre-back with Filip Helander heading for the exit door.

Michael Beale currently has Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar and Leon King at his disposal at the heart of the defence after the return to fitness of the former Hearts man. Big Swede Helander has spent an extended period out injured and no real indication of a return has been set with his contract set to expire in the coming weeks.

Rangers boss Beale has already started face-to-face talks with potential arrivals this summer and has already stated a desire to add at least FIVE new faces. Hutton reckons one of those positions will be a central defender as he raised a question mark over Souttar's fitness over a prolonged period of time.

The ex-football turned pundit believes it will always be Goldson plus one other with Davies the man in possession of the jersey at present. Having further strength and depth will also give key cover and provide competition while also giving the option of going to three at the back

Hutton told Football Insider: “I think they still will. It is probably an area Michael Beale will look to strengthen.

"It is always going to be Goldson plus one other. Davies has come onto a game, it has taken him a bit of time, after that there is Leon King, Helander who will go and Souttar, who I really like as a football but can he stay fit for a prolonged period of time? That is the big question mark above him.

“I think Michael Beale will look to bring in another centre-half. He has spoken about it as well, there is an option for him to go three at the back if he really wants.

“I think adding in another centre-back to provide competition is something that he will look to do.“
