Alan Hutton makes Rangers claim as he details what John Lundstram brings to Ibrox club

Alan Hutton insists the signing of John Lundstram is evidence Rangers aren't relaxing and are aiming to push forward at home and in Europe.

The former Rangers defender was delighted to see the ex-Sheffield United midfielder join the club last week and he looked assured during his first 45 minutes of his Ibrox career.

Hutton believes the signing will fire up the rest of the midfielders at the club to improve their game and that should see the likes of Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack take it up another level.

Steven Gerrard was focusing on strengthening his midfield this summer and Lundstram adds a quality that he never had in that position.

He provides a more physical threat in that department and Hutton reckons that will be a big advantage in their bid to keep the Premiership title at Ibrox.

He told Football Insider: “He’s very physical, he’s a big presence in there. You need that in the Scottish game, he can definitely handle himself.

“If you look at his goals and assists, it might not be where you want it to be for a midfielder getting into the box. You want him to contribute at the end of the pitch. That’s something he can improve on and learn about from Steven Gerrard, those late runs and shots on goal. I expect improvement in that area.

“But he’s not there just to be back up. He’s there to enhance the squad, he’s there to push them on and make them better.

“As a player, a midfielder, if you see that standard of player come in it’s going to make you better. Simple as that.

“They’re not standing still, they’re trying to push forward and this is the intent of Rangers.”
