Alan Hughes admits tough Ireland AM schedule caused split with husband Karl Broderick

Alan Hughes had admitted that the tough Ireland AM schedule caused him and husband Karl Broderick to split a couple of years ago.

The Virgin Media Ireland TV presenter has been getting up at 4.30am to go live at 7am for 20 years and it has taken its toll on his personal life and his marriage.

Alan told RSVP Live : "[Being on the show] affects relationships because of the unsociable hours we do. People will know that Karl and I broke up for a time a couple of years back.

"It was down to work pressures and getting up so early. We found that we needed separate bedrooms during the week because we couldn’t keep doing that type of thing."

While the show and working such unsociable hours can be hard, Alan explained that he still loves his job and he would never change it.

He continued: "There are always difficult times because a show like this is hard.

"I am not saying that was the major cause of it [the break up] but these things don’t help."

"Ireland AM can be very stressful and intense, but it is brilliantly rewarding at the end of the day and we love it."

Alan is also very excited to have his co-star, Ciara Doherty, back on the sofa when she returns from maternity leave next month: "I can’t wait for Ciara to be back in two weeks and that is going to be brilliant."

The long-standing Virgin Media presenter was left in hospital after a horror injury on holiday back in May.

However, Alan is back on his feet once again and he is focused on being fit for annual pantomine later this year.

He said: "I’m getting there. Look at me, I am not hobbling as much and I am able to get around.

"My goal is to be dancing on stage at the panto dome at Christmas."
