Alan Dershowitz proclaims Trump more powerful than a 'king' after judge's rebuke

NEW YORK _ All hail the Donald!

Alan Dershowitz asserted that President Donald Trump is more powerful than a king in a Fox News interview after a judge rebuked Trump for acting like a monarch.

"Of course the president's not the king. The president's far more powerful than the king," Dershowitz said Monday night on Laura Ingraham's show. "The president has the power that kings have never had."

The constitutional law expert was responding to the decision hours earlier by U.S. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson ordering ex-White House counsel Don McGahn to abide by a congressional subpoena.

The judge slam dunked Trump's spurious claim that his advisers have "absolute immunity" from congressional oversight.

"The president is not a king," the judge said.

The decision was related to a congressional abuse of power investigation in the Russia probe. McGahn told special counsel Robert Mueller that Trump tried to get him to fire Mueller to protect himself from the probe.

But it also could apply to Trump's effort to stonewall the impeachment investigation.

Jackson noted that some of the officials who are refusing to testify in the impeachment drama are no longer even working for the White House, making their claim of immunity all the more flimsy.

Dershowitz, however, said the ruling would have little actual impact because even if it survives an appeal it would only force McGahn to show up. Once he abides by a subpoena he could decline to answer any substantive questions by declaring executive privilege, Dershowitz claimed.
