Alan Cumming believes 'legendary' Brandon Lee story caught Scotland by surprise

Alan Cumming reckons the story of imposter schoolboy Brandon Lee has become legendary in Scotland because we think we're really 'canny' - but ultimately got caught out.

The actor was on the red carpet for My Old School the film about Bearsden's Brian Mackinnon, who in 1995 pretended to be a 16-year-old Canadian student in a bid to get into medical school until it emerged he was in fact a 30-year-old man.

Alan, who graced the red carpet at GFT for Glasgow Film Festival in a checked suit alongside Lulu, Lawrence Chaney, Dawn Steele and Brandon's old school pals, has voiced the animation in the film.

He said: "I think this was such a good, Scottish sort of legendary story. I think it's, you know, like, up there with Whisky Galore.

"The guy went back to school at 30 and pretended to be 15. We think we're really canny in Scotland, and, you know, people can't pull the wool over our eyes, but he did.

"I think we both admire and are horrified by that. And so I think that's kind of why this story is still fascinating because this documentary really tells you so much more about it by the people who were actually there. It's more a film about his classmates."

Alan said it was great to have the actual world premiere in Glasgow because although it was at Sundance, it was just virtual because of Covid.

He added: "I think it's really appropriate that it's in Glasgow."

Alan also revealed he was asked to play Brandon's character twenty five years ago in a film but never did and added: "So it's funny how these characters come back to you."

"It's nice to be back in Scotland. At the moment I am going to do another season of a show I did for Apple+, and I'm coming back to Scotland in the summer to do a solo dance theatre piece for the National Theatre and at the festival."
