Alan Carr divides fans as Royal Variety host after 'awkward' Prince William jibe

Alan Carr has divided viewers of the Royal Variety Performance after he made an 'awkward' dig at Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The 45-year-old TV host fronted this year’s event from the Royal Albert Hall in London, and while fans were excited to see what the cheeky comedian had in store, they were left rather flabbergasted after his savage royal dis.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted by ITV viewers as the pair watched on from the royal box.

Knowing that his hosting duties were being watched by William and Kate, Alan couldn't help but send a cheeky comment their way during the show.

The much-loved comedian commented on how stunning Kate looked in her incredible green gown before reassuring William that he wasn't flirting with his wife.

Alan, who has been married to husband Paul Drayton since 2018, quipped to Prince William: "Sir, I am sure you do not know who I am.

“But I am not hitting on your wife."

While Kate and William found the jibe hilarious as the cameras filmed them giggling with one another, some viewers at home didn't find Alan's joke as amusing.

One furious ITV viewer tweeted: "FFS! This is unbearable. How did Alan Carr get the job? What an unfunny, embarrassment he is. Even his parents are squirming. #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

"This is so boring. Alan Carr really isn't that funny. Stop with the royal jokes," another complained.

"Who the f**k booked Alan Carr for #TheRoyalVarietyPerformance? His jokes are as old as Rod Stewart’s hair style," someone else quipped.

Meanwhile, a fourth tweeted: "I love Alan but this really isn't his gig.

Although there was a lot of negativity surrounding Alan's hosting duties for the prestigious event, there was a lot of love too.

“Not an Alan Carr fan, but he has made me smile tonight.#RoyalVarietyPerformance," one viewer gushed.

"Alan can do no wrong! What are all these rubbish tweets about? He's been great," another wrote.

"Gosh! Nobody can do it better than Alan. Of course he was going to make a joke about the royals. Calm down everyone," someone else insisted.

Running for the 109th year, the Royal Variety Performance made a comeback for 2021 with a star-studded lineup including Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, and Anne Marie.
