Alan Carr admits marriage split from alcoholic husband is still very 'raw'

Alan Carr has admitted his split from husband Paul Drayton is still very "raw".

The pair had been married for three years - and together for 13 years - before they decided to split during lockdown. The couple never confirmed the reason for their split, but insisted it was a joint and "amicable" decision.

Alan appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today to chat with Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray about his new TV show and his recent tour. He explained how he found the tour therapeutic as his split from Paul was understandably still quite raw. He had to postpone the shows following the Covid pandemic, and re-wrote them all following their split.

Speaking about his Regional Trinket tour, Alan said: "This show had to be rescheduled because of Covid; I just really didn't want to cancel. My marriage broke down in lockdown. No, it's fine - people head tilt when you've got bad news."

As Charlotte apologised for her reaction to him mentioning his marriage split, he insisted it was all OK, before adding: "I wrote the tour and then it just didn't make sense when I came out of lockdown because the marriage had broken down.

"I was writing fresh and on the go, so it's very personal and very raw, but it's going down well."

However, he has found being on stage quite "therapeutic".

"It does make it therapeutic. There were people that were like, oh are you going to cancel the tour? and I was like, no I need it. I get the impression people just want to laugh and I do see it as therapy and just get on with it," he admitted.

The pair confirmed their split back in January with a joint statement.

"After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce they are separating. They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways," it read.

"We request that their privacy is respected at this sensitive time."

Back in 2021, Paul headed into therapy and rehab after he went public with his booze battle by posting a picture of his black eye following a drinking binge. He shared the now-deleted Instagram post in August 2021 and sparked concern from his followers. He had initially joked that the injury was due to an argument with husband Alan.

Paul then apologised and clarified how he got the black eye, and confessed he had punched himself in the face during a drunken binge, as Alan released a statement: "When I arrived back home from Wales, Paul was covered in scratches and bruises from a drinking binge. We are now working together to get the help he needs to get better which is our number one priority right now."
