The audience at a pantomime were treated to a fairytale ending when Aladdin proposed to Jasmine during the curtain call.
On Friday 27 November, actor Matthew Pomeroy, who is currently portraying the titular character in a production of Aladdin at De Montfort Hall theatre in Leicester, made a surprise announcement at the end of the show.
Addressing the audience, he said: “You don’t get to see that moment, but now you do.”
He then turned to his partner and co-star Natasha Lamb, telling her: ”The last four years you’ve changed my life. You are the kindest, most caring person.”
As the audience and pantomime cast realised what Mr Pomeroy was about to ask Ms Lamb, the theatre erupted in cheers and applause.
After pointing out her parents in the audience, Mr Pomeroy unveiled a ring box from his costume.
Describing Ms Lamb as his “best friend”, he then got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him.
As Ms Lamb accepted his proposal, celebratory streamers came down upon them on stage.
Mr Pomeroy told the BBC that proposing was “scary”, explaining that he hadn’t figured out where he was going to put the ring after changing into his costume for the show’s finale.
“It didn’t have pockets — so when I bowed I thought it would fall out the belt,” he said.
“I spend my life stage – it’s my happy place. Proposing on there fits me perfectly.”
He added that having both the couple’s parents in the audience made the moment “more magical and special”.
Ms Lamb said she felt “overwhelmed”, describing the turn of events as “a bit of a blur”.
“I had no idea what he was going to do, it was incredible,” she said.
“It’s the best way for us. We spend every day together on stage and shall carry on for however many more years to come.”
The couple first met while performing at Butlins in Minehead.
