Alabama receivers played rock-paper-scissors over deep routes in a blowout win

You know the non-conference schedule is easy for the Alabama Crimson Tide when they have receivers playing rock-paper-scissors over the right to run a deep route.

Because that’s exactly what happened during the Tide’s 49-7 win over Southern Miss on Saturday.

Multiple camera crews at the game caught an exchange between receivers Jerry Jeudy and DeVonta Smith. Ahead of a second-down playcall, the two played rock-paper-scissors with Jeudy winning the impromptu contest.

Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs explained what unfolded, via AL.com:

“That’s funny because we have playmakers everywhere and at any moment, any guy can make a play so once they got the play call, they knew, ‘Oh, this is the route that is going to catch the touchdown. So they rock, paper, scissored over who was going to run that route.”

Despite the rock-paper-scissor game, neither Jeudy nor Smith were the intended targets of the next play. Jaylen Waddle caught a 25-yard pass to set up an Alabama touchdown later in the drive.
