Alabama hires former FSU Heisman winner Chris Weinke to coaching staff

Alabama has hired a Florida State Heisman Trophy winner, and his first assignment will be to help the Crimson Tide beat the Seminoles.

Chris Weinke is joining Alabama's football staff as an offensive analyst, according to a Wednesday report from The Tuscaloosa News.

Weinke assumes the position after two seasons as a quarterbacks coach with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. He previously served as Bradenton IMG Academy's director of football for five years beforehand.

Weinke brings a wealth of experience and connections on the recruiting trail to Alabama, which has lost Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and former FSU quarterback Clint Trickett from its offensive staff in recent weeks.

Kiffin, Alabama's former offensive coordinator, became head coach at Florida Atlantic, and hired Trickett, a former offensive analyst, away as a tight ends coach. Sarkisian turned his short-lived offensive coordinator role with Alabama into the same position with the Atlanta Falcons.

Weinke, who played at FSU from 1997-2000 after a stint playing minor league baseball, led the Seminoles to the 1999 national championship and became the oldest player to win a Heisman Trophy in 2000 at 28 years old.

Florida State and Alabama will meet on Sept. 2 in Atlanta to open the 2017 season.
