Alabama high school shooting kills 1 student, injures another

A shooting at an Alabama high school left one student dead with another injured Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The shooting happened during dismissal time at Huffman High School in Birmingham when two students _ a 17-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy _ were shot, Birmingham Police Chief Orlando Wilson said at a news conference.

The girl was killed and the boy was in critical but stable condition.

"This should not happen in schools. We send our kids to school and things of this nature happen," Wilson said. "It's unfortunate."

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the female victim was a senior who had been accepted into college and had dreams of becoming a nurse. She would have turned 18 in 30 days, he said.

A school employee was also injured, but was treated and released at the scene, Al.com reported.

Birmingham police were working to determine whether the shooting was accidental. Cops recovered a gun, and no arrests have been made.

The Birmingham City School system said the school was briefly placed on lockdown.
