Alabama abortion law: Hector Bellerin calls on men to 'speak out' about strict US abortion laws

Spain and Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has called on more men to "speak out" after abortion laws became more strict in the US.

The 24-year-old said he wanted to see if more people "from the industry" would comment on the latest legislation.

Missouri's Republican-led House recently passed legislation designed to survive court challenges, which would ban abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy

That news came days after Alabama's governor signed a bill making performing an abortion a crime in nearly all cases.

Bellerin is the latest public figure to hit out at the news, after Rihanna, Jameela Jamil and dozens of celebrities spoke out against the controversial Bill.

He tweeted: "I wanted to see if anyone from our industry would speak out about the abortion bill, but I guess people are just too scared.

"This isn't just an issue for women, it's one for every human being.

"We fight equality and this is something men should fight for and not hide away from".

Bellerin's tweet was met with praise on social media, with many commending him for speaking about the issue.

One user on Twitter hailed him as a "credit to the profession" for "using your platform to bring inconvinient topics to light".

The Spaniard has underwent knee surgery in January following a season-ending UCL injury against London rivals Chelsea and is continuing his recovery ahead of next season.
