Al Porter to perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival after comeback to comedy circuit

Al Porter is bringing his new stand up show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August – six years after making his critically-acclaimed debut there.

The Dublin funny man, once tipped to be the next Graham Norton, has been making a low-key comeback on the comedy circuit since the start of the year.

Al, 30, quit his Today FM show and all other professional engagements in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct – but was never charged with any offence.

Posting on Facebook he said: “Last night I performed the final gig on my Work in Progress tour in Killarney.

“These were by far the best gigs I’ve ever done. The venues went from big to very small, from pubs and cafes to petrol stations and some theatres too.

“This time around, though, I can appreciate just how lucky I am to do what I love and I don’t take any gig for granted.

“I am so grateful for the chance to perform again.

“As I say on stage, you don’t move on from your past, you move on with it and take the lessons you learned with you.

“That’s the last Irish gigs for a while but I’d like to hone the show a bit more, so next stop I’m going back to Edinburgh Fringe!

“I’ll be going back this year for my first Fringe show in six years! I can’t wait.”

Tallaght native Al was nominated for best show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016, the first Irish nominee in years.Previous winners include Graham Norton and Tommy Tiernan.

The promo on the festival website says Al is back “six years since his last Fringe show and making a mess of his life and career”.

It adds: “Al is moving forward with everything he’s learned. Here he reimagines the comic and person he can be today.

“Back selling out venues across Ireland, Al follows his dream once more. God loves a trier.”

Al is also writing and directing at the Olympia panto with Ryan Andrews.
