Al Chapman Emmerdale death sees fans predict character return for Ellis - but he will be played by someone else

Emmerdale fans are wondering if Al Chapman’s death might see a character return to the village.

Last week, Al Chapman, played by Michael Wildman, died in shocking scenes. Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley, has been charged with the murder of Al, following a perceived showdown between the two. If convicted, Cain faces many, many years behind bars.

We suspect there will be many twists and turns in this storyline to come. In the meantime, Emmerdale fans have speculated whether Al’s son Ellis Chapman might be back in the village soon.

Viewers have put their theories online. On Twitter, @macnamara60 said: “Will Ellis Chapman be returning to #Emmerdale for his dad’s funeral I wonder?” We saw @tamlizann post: “Will Ellis return? #Emmerdale.”

While @Nk3play2 added: “I'd really like it if Ellis came back for this. But I don't see it happening without a recast and that wouldn't mean much to me.”·

The potential recasting is in reference to the difficulties associated with the role of Ellis Chapman. Asan N'Jie initially played Ellis but left the role following a heated brawl in 2019 with Jamie Lomas. The incident happened at the TV Choice Awards that year.

The actor issued an apology at the time of his dismissal from the show, before he was replaced by actor Aaron Anthony. We then saw Aaron leave the soap reportedly around a controversy earlier this year.

It came after an alleged race probe on set which involved two of Emmerdale’s most famous stars Matthew Wolfenden and Isabel Hodgins - which saw them temporarily leave the programme.

At the time, a source said: "Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds to film his scenes in recent months.

"He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last. He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses. He now feels his position on the show is untenable."

So, if Ellis does return for any scenes following Al's death, we'll likely have to see the role recast again. We'll keep you posted on any news we have regarding that.
