The Grand Imam of Egypt's al-Azhar university, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, condemned the "hateful terrorist attack" in the French city of Nice on Thursday.
Such attacks contradict the teachings of Islam and all monotheistic religions, he said in a statement, calling for confronting all forms of violence, extremism and hatred.
He also warned against "violent and hate speech" in a reference to the display of images in France of the Prophet Mohammad.
On Wednesday, al-Tayeb called on the international community to criminalize "anti-Muslim" actions.
