CHANDIGARH: SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday courted arrest along with other party leaders in Delhi, demanding immediate repeal of the three contentious agriculture laws and legal guarantee ensuring assured procurement on minimum support price(MSP) for all major crops.
Sukhbir was leading the protest march held to mark one year of the passage of the three laws from Gurdwara Rakabganj to the Parliament. Party workers, despite unprecedented restrictions imposed by the Delhi Police, held a march towards the Parliament from the gurdwara after performing ardas (prayer).
The SAD also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the executive magistrate. Besides asking for repeal of the three contentious laws, it demanded a commitment from the Centre that farmers would be consulted before bringing in any legislation affecting their lives.
While addressing the protest earlier, the SAD president said the party would fight relentlessly to ensure the repeal of the three agriculture laws. He also assured Punjabis that the laws would not be implemented in Punjab once the SAD- BSP alliance formed the government in the state. The SAD leaders condemned the manner in which party workers were prevented from reaching the national capital and said some workers had to trek 20 kilometers away.
BSP state president Jasvir Singh Garhi said the party was committed to ensure repeal of the three black laws in Parliament once a new government was formed at the Centre in 2024. Even Sukhbir stated that the SAD did not need a certificate about being pro- farmer from anyone.
