JAIPUR/AJMER: A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) who was posted in Rajasthan’s Ajmer and formed part of the team that arrested dargah cleric Syed Salman Chishti for offering a bounty on former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s head was shunted out and put on awaiting posting orders (APO) list Wednesday for allegedly being “sympathetic” towards Chishti, a history-sheeter.
In a video of the arrest that went viral, DSP Sandeep Saraswat can be heard advising Chishti to claim that he issued the death threat to Sharma in an inebriated state in order to escape the law. On Thursday, officiating DGP Umesh Mishra ordered an inquiry against Saraswat. Saraswat claimed that whatever he said was a police ruse to avoid confrontation or tension while arresting any accused.
Chishti was arrested by the Ajmer police on Tuesdaymidnight after a case was registered against him following a viral video in which he had offered his house to people willing to eliminate the suspended BJP spokesperson who had made “derogatory” remarks against the Prophet.
