Ajax will not take legal action against UEFA despite costly referee 'mistakes' vs Chelsea

Ajax director of football Edwin van der Sar says it is "hopeless and pointless" for the club to take legal action against UEFA over the refereeing in their draw with Chelsea back in November.

Claims have been made in the Dutch media that European football’s governing body acknowledged 'arbitrary' refereeing errors in the group stage encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Ajax led the game 4-2 in London before two quick red cards saw them reduced to nine men, allowing Chelsea to fight back and earn a 4-4 draw.

That result played a huge role in the final standings of the group which saw Ajax eliminated from the competition and forced into the Europa League, with Chelsea and Valencia advancing to the last 16.

Calls have been made on UEFA to pay the Amsterdammers over £10million in compensation given the impact of referee Gianluca Rocchi's decisions during the match.

Former Southampton forward Dusan Tadic accused the Italian of "destroying" the game, after sending off both Daley Blind and Joel Veltman for offences in the same phase of play.

"We were the best team on the pitch and we're disappointed because we should be talking about Ajax and our beautiful game, but we can't because a guy [Rocchi] stole everything from us," Tadic claimed post-game.

"I don't like to look for excuses or talk about other people, but we should be talking about how superior we were to Chelsea and we can’t because someone destroyed everything. It can’t be that someone destroys a game in this way."

However, Manchester United legend van der Sar believes any attempt to gain financial compensation would be a waste of time.

"The decisions in that situation had so much influence on the game," he said.

"And, ultimately, on the final standings in the group. "[But] That is a hopeless and therefore pointless mission."
