But within two minutes of the second half Ajax were level when David Neres equalised for the Dutch side.
Ajax had the better of the chances in an entertaining game with Hakim Ziyech particularly dangerous, but they could not muster a second.
The result means it is all to play for when the two teams meet next week in Turin.
