Ajax manager breaks silence on Antony and Manchester United transfer

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has broken his silence on whether Antony will join Manchester United.

United have reportedly turned their attention to the Brazilian winger as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer. Reports in the Netherlands this week claimed that the 22-year-old is 'striking' as he looks to force a move to Old Trafford.

Antony was seen at Ajax's training complex on Friday however he did not feature in training due to the Amsterdam club reportedly rejecting an €80m offer from United. In an interview with De Telegraaf on Saturday, the forward claimed that he loved the Amsterdam club however before today's match with Sparta Rotterdam, Antony informed Schreuder that he 'did not feel 100 per cent to play'.

At full time following his club's 1-0 victory in the Eredivisie, Schreuder was more confident about Antony staying in the Netherlands. He told ESPN : "I want Antony to stay.

"I am assuming that the club will not sell him. The money that is being thrown around these days is crazy. But I would not find it okay if we sell another player.

"We are in a powerful position, financially. Yes, my feeling is good. I understand Antony. But you play for Ajax.

"We are playing Champions League football. I don't think Manchester United are playing Champions League football."

Ajax's goalscorer on Sunday was Steven Bergwijn who has Premier League experience with Tottenham Hotspur under his belt. When asked if he had spoken to Antony about the league, Bergwijn joked: "No, he doesn't really speak English so it's hard."
