Ajax find Marc Overmars replacement after sexting scandal resignation

Ajax have approached Jordi Cruyff over their vacant director of football position as they ramp up their search for Marc Overmars' successor.

Overmars, 48, resigned from his role with the Dutch giants in early February after admitting he had sent sexually inappropriate messages to other members of staff.

The former Arsenal and Netherlands winger had been in the role since 2012 and signed a new contract until 2026 shortly before leaving his post.

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar, 51, has taken on director of football duties on an interim basis as the club looks for a new incumbent.

And the Amsterdam side have identified Cruyff, 48, as a leading candidate for the role with a view to appointing him this summer.

That is according to Spanish outlet Marca, which notes the former Manchester United playmaker is out of contract with Barcelona in June, so he would be available for free.

Cruyff, the son of Ajax legend Johan, has been working for the Catalan giants as a sporting advisor since last summer.

The report adds he will discuss his future with Barcelona, where he has a great deal of influence shaping the future of the club.

Blaugrana president Joan Laporta views Cruyff, who spent time at Ajax's academy, as integral to the team supporting manager Xavi.

Barca are expected to offer their executive a new contract but interest from the Netherlands could leave him with a difficult decision to make this summer.

Meanwhile, Ajax are said to have other unspecified options on the table to fill the role Overmars left vacant due to behaviour he confessed was "unacceptable".

"I am ashamed," Overmars said in a statement on Ajax's website.

"Last week I was confronted with reports about my behaviour. And how this has come across to others. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I was crossing the line with this, but that was made clear to me in recent days.

"I now see that too. But it is too late. I see no other option but to leave Ajax.

"This also has a major impact on my private situation. That is why I ask everyone to leave me and my family alone."

Overmars' resignation came after the Ajax board received numerous complaints from female employees claiming he had sent them inappropriate messages and sexually explicit photographs.

He had been linked with a role at Newcastle just months earlier following the Magpies' £305million takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and previously suggested he would like to take up an executive position in the Premier League.
