Ajax defender likened to £68m Matthijs de Ligt rules out Liverpool transfer move

Liverpool-linked Ajax defender Perr Schuurs has ruled out a transfer move to Anfield in January - and says he wants to stay in the Netherlands for a number of seasons yet.

Schuurs impressed against Jurgen Klopp's side in the Champions League this season and has been mooted to be a player that Liverpool could be interested in to strengthen their options in defence.

But it appears that the player will not be moving anywhere any time soon as he wants to continue his development at the club he agreed to join in December 2017.

Still only 21, Schuurs is a young player and believes that it would be best to stay where he is to guarantee game time.

He said: "I am now a starting player which was my goal beforehand. I am very happy about that. I feel at home here.

"I’m not really in favour of going abroad early. I feel at home here so I want to play here for a few more seasons.

"It is not always fun to read [criticism]. You know when you play at Ajax that you are under a magnifying glass. But if you come out well, you will only be appreciated more."

Football Oranje's Dutch football expert Michael Statham told the ECHO on the 'Under the Radar' podcast from Blood Red that Schuurs has been earning rave reviews for his Eredivisie performances, comparing him to Juventus man Matthijs de Ligt.

Ajax sporting director Edwin van der Sar agreed shortly afterwards, saying Schuurs was 'taking his time' but could match De Ligt's 'world-class' quality.

Statham explained: "I really like Schuurs. He fits the role of De Ligt and has filled the void that he left a year-and-a-half ago. He is a centre back who is strong, with really good skills on the ball, who is brave and takes risks.

"He was captain of Fortuna Sittard in the second division at 17 and then he went on to achieve greats things with Ajax, becoming a first-team regular.

"Last season he made a few starts but he was wobbly, he made mistakes, and it is only this season that he has become a starting centre-back, where he has formed a good partnership with Daley Blind.

"But you can see that Schuurs has obviously taken a lot from De Ligt and he is probably going to play in England or Germany because of his build and the way he is on the ball."

A move away from Ajax is likely to happen at some point should Schuurs continue to develop and become the player many believe he could be.

But for now any talk of a €30m move to Anfield has been squashed.
