Marc Overmars has compared the Dutch FA (KNVB) and Uefa to Donald Trump after the Ajax chief declared his frustration that football's organisers are still yet to understand the full implications of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Dutch Eredivisie season is currently suspended in line with the vast majority of world sport, though the KNVB has confirmed it will follow Uefa's direction to attempt to finish the current season by August 3.
The KNVB was among 55 Uefa members who on Wednesday discussed possible next steps for football on the continent following the devastating impact of Covid-19.
The KNVB insists it will try to complete the season, even if it means re-starting the suspended campaign in mid-June and playing through into August.
Former Arsenal star Overmars, now the technical director of Ajax, told Dutch paper De Telegraf: "Why would it be about money and not people's well-being at this time? I had hoped that the KNVB would take an independent decision, but they are now hiding behind Uefa.
"I have a lot of difficulty understanding that [decision]. We in the Netherlands are not as dependent on television rights incomes as the leagues in Spain, England, Italy and Germany are.
"I think that they had been put under big pressure by Uefa to continue playing at whatever cost.
"I'm comparing the KNVB and UEFA with the sentiments of American president Donald Trump a week ago when he thought the economy was more important than the coronavirus.
"Hallo! There are more than a 100 people dying daily in the Netherlands because of the coronavirus."
Ajax lead the Eredivisie on goal difference, but Overmars believes that this season should finished: "The league is dead, life is more important."
