Ajax and Juventus violence as police use water cannons on fans ahead of Champions League clash

Ajax and Juventus fans collided in Amsterdam ahead of their Champions League quarter-final as police used water cannons on unruly supporters.

There violent scenes outside the Johan Cruyff ArenA and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Sirving has confirmed 120 Juve fans have been arrested.

He declared that some travelling supporters were found carrying "objects that were not exactly appropriate for a trip to the stadium", according to The Mirror .

Reports in Italy claim those arrested were found to be carrying knives, screwdrivers, sticks and pepper spray.

Dozens of Ajax hooligans attempted to attack police just outside the venue also.

Those clashes were initially broken down, shortly before the Juventus side's coach arrived, around 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

But clashes resumed shortly afterwards, with Ajax fans throwing rocks and flares at police vans.

Officers responded by charging on horseback, as well as using tear gas and water cannons.

Ajax fans infamously attacked a bar full of Celtic supporters before a Champions League tie in Amsterdam in 2013.

Six Hoops fans were jailed in the Netherlands following the incidents but had their convictions overturned in January 2019.

Police evidence was declared inadmissible during an appeal process and the men were freed.
