AJ Tracey cancels tonight's Turbo Island Bristol gig as 'organisers fined'

AJ Tracey has called off tonight's impromptu Bristol gig at late notice.

The BRIT-nominated rapper tweeted at 11am today (April 18): "Coming to link you lot and shoot some hoops today! 12pm - birmingham - dale end, 4pm - manchester - platt fields, 8pm - bristol - turbo island. Everyone invited just turn up!"

But after showing up in Birmingham and Manchester, Tracey cancelled the Turbo Island appearance. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham says organisers have been fined over the event at Platt Fields Park, which hundreds attended in breach of Covid rules.

Tracey posted a video on Twitter at 5.50pm, captioned: "I'll be back when it's safe to do so, sorry guys."

He said: "It's not going to be safe for me to come to Bristol. I didn't expect that many people to turn up to Manny. And genuinely it's just not OK for me to go ahead so I'm going to head home to London.

"But yeah man, I appreciate you lot showing support, and when it's safe to do so, I'm definitely gonna come back and do some shows. So yeah, big love you lot."

When a Twitter user asked Mr Burnham why he was not taking action over the Manchester event, the Mayor replied: "We are - organisers have been fined."

Sharing a video showing hundreds of people near a basketball court at Platt Fields, Manchester Evening News reporter Steve Robson tweeted at 5.42pm: "Looks like he’s leaving! There was some filming and singing and crowd interaction and that was about it."

Turbo Island, a triangle of land at the junction of Stokes Croft and Jamaica Street, is an area where street drinkers and ravers often party until the early hours.

Gatherings of more than six people outdoors are banned at present under coronavirus rules.
