AIS and True set up 5G development labs at Chula

Two major mobile operators have launched 5G development through a collaboration with Chulalongkorn University, in line with regulator requirements.

Vichaow Rakphongphairoj, group co-president of True Corporation, said True is establishing the 5G & Innovative Solution Centre through Truelab@ChulaEngineering at the university's engineering faculty to develop 5G technology and solutions.

The centre is a reworking of the True Innovative Centre, previously located at Chamchuri Square, which worked with the university for eight years.

True is also providing research scholarships to students, from undergraduate to doctoral degrees, with the goal of helping drive Thailand's success in the 5G era.

TrueLab@ChulaEngineering will occupy 600 square metres and aims to make contributions in the fields of education, medicine, transport and industry.

The venue is for learning and training, exhibiting relevant case studies, exchanging innovative ideas and sharing experiences in the form of open innovation, for which True will provide technical support in the form of equipment, devices, expertise and funds for researchers and students, Mr Vichaow said.

True Corp has spent an initial 20 million baht to renovate the building's space at the Faculty of Engineering under a 10-year agreement, aiming to be fully operational by March.

AIS is working with the Faculty of Engineering to open the 5G Garage Innovation Lab for developers to innovate using the first 5G Live network in Thailand.

AIS and the engineering faculty in December signed a memorandum of understanding in research studies for the development of 5G technology.

The 5G Garage Innovation Lab consists of comprehensive basic knowledge for 5G technology structure, network equipment, signal-receiving equipment and examples of use cases that come from the cooperation of world-class equipment manufacturers, along with Co-Develop 5G prototype service workshops to support the management of organisations in both the public and private sectors.

The 5G Garage Innovation Lab is at the Engineering Centennial Memorial Building. It will be available to students and developers by March.
