Airports on alert as police close in on hit-and-run suspect

The scene of the hit-and-run, where the girl was knocked off her bicycle.

Police say they are closing in on the driver believed to be involved in a hit-and-run that left a 13-year-old cyclist in a critical condition in Melbourne.

The girl was struck while riding near the corner of Bell and Sussex streets in Coburg just after 8:00pm on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp told ABC Radio Melbourne that officers had identified the suspect after seizing the BMW involved in the incident.

"We have put alerts out at the airports," he said.

"We've got some very strong leads around this. We do have a name but at this point in time we don't want to compromise the investigation by putting out a photograph or a name.

"There is a specific individual we're looking at the moment."

Deputy Commissioner Crisp would not confirm if the woman was the owner of the car.

Earlier, investigators said they believed the person behind the wheel at the time of the crash was a female of Asian appearance and aged in her 30s, with straight shoulder-length hair.

They said it was possible she may have been with a man around the same age, also described as being of Asian appearance.

The 13-year-old remains in a critical condition at the Royal Children's Hospital, after suffering head injuries and broken bones.
