Airport opens lounge-style area just for dogs complete with toilets and showers

Airports can be a ruff experience for dogs, who are often confined to pet carriers in the lead-up to their flight, before being put in the hold.

But now, that could soon be a thing of the past, and it's sure to get puppies wagging their tails in excitement.

In fact, a new lounge-style area is opening for dogs complete with toilets, including a 'pee pole' for pooches who need to cock their legs up when they're doing their business, showers and even a drinks area.

Now, it's not quite got the glamour of a first class lounge, but it does have plenty of handy features for pooches who need some pre-flight pampering, or just need to take a paws amidst all of the hustle and bustle that comes with travelling.

The 'pet relief area' is opening at Osaka's International Airport in Japan later this month.

As well as the toilets, it also offers amenities such as showers for puppies who need a rinse, a water area where they can re-hydrate, and even benches if they want somewhere to flop down before boarding their flight.

As for the, erm, cleanliness of it all? It's been covered; the area has a 'waste flushing system', while the pee pole also has its own washing functions.

The airport's version of doggy day care has been created in a bid to help animals relieve themselves before they board the flight.

The idea is that this will help reduce the stress of travelling for the pets, and therefore make it a smoother trip for their humans too.

The airport's owners Kansai Airports are behind the new venture, the first of its kind at an airport in the country.

The new pet relief area follows on from their move to create toilets which are also accessible for service dogs.

The new service dog-friendly toilets were installed last year, and are fitted with a dog pictogram and equipped with an intercom system for owners' convenience.

Service dogs will be able to use these as well as the existing toilets within the terminals.
