Airport officer stabbed in Flint, Mich.; FBI can't yet say if it's a terror attack

DETROIT _ It is too early to tell whether a stabbing attack at the Bishop International Airport in Flint on Wednesday morning was an act of terrorism, the FBI office in Detroit said in a statement.

The agency said it appears to be "an isolated incident" and said the victim, an airport police officer, is in stable condition. Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said the victim was stabbed in the neck and that the airport was evacuated shortly after the incident occurred.

"The suspect was taken into custody at the airport and is currently being questioned by law enforcement officers," the FBI statement reads. "We are aware of reports that the attacker made statements immediately prior to or while attacking the officer, but it is too early to determine the nature of these alleged statements or whether or not this was an act of terrorism.

"Based on the information that we have at this time, we believe this to be an isolated incident. We currently have no specific, credible information that there is a threat to the Flint community."

Shaw said the FBI is the lead agency investigating the airport attack, with state police assisting.

"This appears to be an isolated incident," Shaw said. "For anybody to jump to the conclusion that it's terrorism is premature, but you don't want to not go that direction either. We are reminding residents here in Michigan to take a breath. Let the FBI do what it has to do to determine what happened. There's no danger to the public at this time."

The FBI is urging anyone with information about the incident to call the agency's Detroit office at (313) 965-2323 or submit information at tips.fbi.gov.
