Airport covid testing must be steamlined to save tourism and aviation jobs

The option of testing for passengers arriving at Scottish airports could provide a vital lifeline to both the tourism and aviation industries.

The current system of expecting all arrivals from an ever-growing list of countries to self-isolate for 14 days is just not practical in the long term.

It puts people off travelling and encourages those that do to bend the rules.

Promises to streamline testing by the UK Government have so far not been delivered and fears are growing that mass redundancies are now around the corner.

Loganair boss Jonathan Hinkles is among those calling for new rules.

These could include offering passengers the option of paying for a test a few days after they touch down in the country – with a negative test meaning they no longer have to self-isolate.

It’s an idea worth exploring if it helps save lives and save jobs.

Other countries, such as Iceland, are doing better than the UK when it comes to keeping things moving.

The longer we live with this virus, the more we are going to have to find ways of adapting to allow the economy to function.
