When you think of a flight attendant, one of the first things which may spring to mind are the uniforms they wear.

A distinctive element of the job, each airline will have its own rules about the presentation of their staff.

However, one airline are finding themselves under fire - owing to their strict dresscode.

Spanning a formidable 22 pages, Norwegian Air's dress guidelines includes one particularly uncompromising rule.

Namely, female flight attendants must carry a doctor's note on them if they wish to not wear heels. This has to be updated every six months.

Other stipulations include wearing heels that are at least 2cm tall and wearing make-up us a must, the  New Zealand Herald  reported.

The airline even goes as far as to specify that make-up must include eye make-up, light foundation and either a tinted moisturiser or powder.

"It is almost comical that we face these issues in 2019," Ingrid Hodnebo, spokesperson for Norway’s Socialist Left Party, told Norwegian newspaper  VG .

"While the rest of society has moved on, Norwegian is stuck in the  Mad Men  universe from the 50s and 60s."

An airline spokesperson said: "Like all global airlines, Norwegian has a comprehensive set of uniform guidelines to ensure that our flying crew represent our brand in a smart and consistent manner.

"The guidelines were drafted with input from our pilot and cabin crew colleagues and have been well received, sharing many gender commonalities in addition to some specific male and female requirements."
