Airline and holiday group shares fall on ash cloud fears

Shares in listed airline groups were suffering this morning as the prospect of another volcanic ash cloud closing down UK airspace loomed into view.

The Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland began erupting on Sunday, causing flights to be cancelled at the country's main Keflavik airport.

Leading airline shares were down on the news this morning. Easyjet fell almost 6% to 341p, while International Consolidated Airlines Group, the merged BA-Iberia, was 3.5% lower at 239p.

Travel groups more broadly were also hit. FTSE 100 group Tui Travel was down 3.4% to 229p, while mid-cap Thomas Cook was 3.5% weaker at 145p.

Ryanair, which also put out results this morning, was down 4.7% at €3.37, having been down 8% at one stage.
