Airdrieonians pay tribute to former chairman and "gentleman" David Smith

Airdrieonians have paid tribute to their former chairman David Smith after he passed away at the weekend.

Smith played a vital role in the Diamonds' move from Broomfield to New Broomfield in 1998.

And the club's current director of football, Stuart Millar, paid tribute to "a gentleman" who made a huge contribution to the club.

Millar told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "It's very sad news.

"David was very much a gentleman.

"He was very supportive of his local club and anybody who is willing to give such a commitment - and willing to put in financial resources - is to be appluaded.

"I knew David many years ago before he came to the club and played football with his son, also called David, in the Boys' Brigade.

"He came on the board of directors at Airdrie and made a huge contribution. He first became involved at Broomfield in 1994 and carried on his work into the new stadium.

"It was great to see him at a couple of our games last season and he was well looked after by the club."

An official statement from Airdrieonians read: "Everyone at the club was deeply saddened to receive the news that former Airdrieonians chairman David Smith passed away at the weekend.

"David was well known amongst Airdrie fans, and played a huge part in moving the club to its new stadium in 1998.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to David's family and friends at this sad time."
