Airdrieonians legend Jimmy Boyle in for Albion Rovers job

Airdrieonians legend Jimmy Boyle is in the running to become the new manager of Monklands rivals Albion Rovers, Lanarkshire Live Sport understands.

The 53-year-old, who took charge of the Diamonds between 2010-2013, is keen to return to first team management after almost seven years and is one of the candidates being considered to replace Kevin Harper at Cliftonhill.

Harper quit earlier this month after knocking back a new contract on reduced terms.

And it's understood Boyle, who left Airdrieonians in October 2013 and hasn't managed a team since, would be thrilled to make his return to the dugout in Coatbridge.

Boyle was appointed Head of Youth Development at Dundee in 2016 after a stint with the Scottish Football Association's licensing setup and became assistant first team manager of the Den's Park first team in 2018.

At the end of last season he was relieved of his duties at Dundee after the club were relegated from the Scottish Premiership.

A former Airdrie midfielder with over 200 appearances in an eight-year spell in the 1990s, Boyle was a popular player with the Diamonds faithful as they reached two Scottish Cup finals in 1992 and 1995.

As Diamonds manager, Boyle led Airdrie to promotion to the old First Division in 2012.

He won four and lost one in five meetings with Rovers, so Cliftonhill fans won't have too many fond memories of him - although Rovers' solitary victory was a 7-2 thrashing of their rivals in November 2011.

Meanwhile, ex-Albion Rovers skipper Jamie McKenzie has also thrown his hat into the ring to replace Kevin Harper, insisting he would be able to work with a small budget when football returns after the Covid-19 shutdown.
